Why Smartphones Should Be Allowed in High Schools
Many high school students today
bring smartphones to school because phones are part of their daily life. These
devices are not only communication tools, but also sources of information and
learning support. High school education now requires students to access digital
knowledge. Because of this, allowing smartphones in high schools can help
students study more effectively. Smartphones should be allowed in high schools
because they improve learning access, support digital skill development, and
help communication during emergencies.
First, smartphones improve
students’ learning access. Students can search for meaning, view materials
online, and join learning platforms instantly. A study by Pew Research Center
reported that more than 80 percent of students use smartphones to look up academic
information. This means smartphones help students learn faster and easier.
However, some people argue that smartphones can distract students in class. A
2019 report by Common Sense Media found that many students check their phones
often during lessons. Although distraction may happen, schools can still manage
it with rules for phone usage. Clear guidelines help students use phones
responsibly for learning.
Second, smartphones build
stronger digital literacy. Students use their phones to learn apps, browse
academic pages, and practice typing and researching. These skills are needed in
modern workplaces and universities. Indonesian universities also require students
to use online learning systems, so early training in high school is helpful.
Some people say that smartphones increase cyberbullying. Cases of bullying
through chat apps have been reported in many schools. Even so, schools can
provide training in online ethics and set reporting systems. When schools teach
responsibility, students learn to use technology wisely and safely.
Third, smartphones are important
for urgent communication. Students can contact parents or emergency services
fast when unexpected situations happen. In several natural disaster cases, such
as earthquakes in Indonesia, phones helped students reach their families
quickly. Critics say smartphones make cheating during exams easier. Students
may store digital notes or take pictures of answers. Still, this risk can be
reduced. Teachers can collect phones during tests or lock exam mode settings.
Controlled management makes smartphone use safe inside schools.
Smartphones support learning, train digital skills, and help communication during emergencies. High schools should allow smartphone use with proper rules. If schools continue to ban smartphones, students will lose access to fast information and digital literacy preparation. A controlled and educational approach benefits students more than total restriction. Let students use smartphones to learn, improve, and stay connected.
